Flying Healthy

In the heart of Seattle’s Fremont district is Flying Apron Bakery. As a health-conscious individual bordering on vegan, the discovery of this charming bakery and cafe was thrilling. When I was given a copy of “Flying Apron’s Gluten-Free & Vegan Baking Book” as a gift a year or so ago, I excitedly flipped through its pages, salivating at the recipes and photos.

Same exact thing happened when I received “The Lavender Cookbook” as a gift on another occasion. (Author Sharon Shipley is the owner of Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Mon Cheri Cooking School and Caterers.)

Not long after the books joined my library, I inexplicably and suddenly abandoned cookbooks to embark on a culinary journey wherein I created many of my own recipes for appetizers, main courses, and desserts through trial and error. Now that I’ve gotten that crazy project out of my system, I’ve dusted off these two books and have challenged myself to work through one recipe from each per week. (Hey, some ingredients can get pricey.) If I’m happy with how something turned out, I’ll post an entry about the experience.
