Sometimes, I wonder if my eyes glaze over and little hearts appear floating around my head when I spot a particularly awesome rain barrel. They’re just so functional! I mean, check out that nifty saucer to the left. And honestly, after a good rain, it’s clear that our garden goes crazy for rain water.
We’ve been doing our homework on different systems. While there’s no doubt that it’s convenient to buy something ready to go, the DIY aspect is appealing from a perspective of sense of accomplishment…and cost. James City County in Virginia estimates that “finished rain barrels run $80 to $190 for 50-65 gallons of storage,” while “constructing a rain barrel yourself should cost only $15 to $40.” (Btw, JCC offers a host of rebates for water conservation. Pretty cool, Virginia.)
